The Glycemic Index Chart Understanding Food Rankings by Dan Beckwith

The glycemic index chart isn't complex or hard to understand but like anything else it can be daunting if you don't understand what the various numbers mean. It was originally conceived so that doctors their diabetic patients could be on the same page as to what they are eating it's since been found to be helpful not only to diabetics but for non diabetics it's one of the best ways to lose weight Unfortunately it can't help you if you don't understand the numbers what they stand for.

High low in between the numbers rule the glycemic index chart.

The glycemic index chart when you look at it shows a listing of foods. Each food is associated with a number ranging from 0 to 100.

Whenever we eat something our digestion turns it into glucose sugar . It's the glucose that enters our bloodstream gets used as energy for our cells. Some foods get digested faster than others will more quickly cause this blood sugar spike.

The numbers you see on the glycemic index chart simply represent how fast we digest our food how rapidly we will get this spike in blood sugar. For example a high number like 87 means the spike will occur quickly.

A lower number like 15 just means that the food is digested slowly will more slowly enter the bloodstream. Slow steady is MUCH healthier. Particularly if you are a diabetic or are trying to lose weight.

When you first read the glycemic index chart it takes a bit of effort. But you will soon get it. On most carts numbers from 70 + are thought of as in the high range. Numbers from 55 69 are medium 54 are low.

Various glycemic index charts are a little different but they all work on the same ideas. Usually they group foods by the type category they aren't listed by index number.

Looking at a glycemic index chart is eye opening. You will wonder why some foods rank higher or lower than others.

Trying to anticipate where a food is going to rank on the chart is fun challenge. A quick glimpse of the glycemic index chart can be an eye opener confusing on quite a few levels. A snickers bar ranks in the 40's but your daily bagel comes in at a whopping 70's I'd have never guessed that

The reason is fairly basic. Peanuts have a lot of protein. Protein takes a long time to be digested the glucose enters our bloodstream more slowly. Snickers are teeming with peanuts take a longer time to digest.

Here's a loophole in the glycemic index If you MUST eat something that is ranked high on the glycemic index chart mix it with protein. Dying for some white bread Add some peanut butter Or toss in some tuna.

It due to the loophole that some foods may seem to have an odd ranking on the glycemic index chart. if you didn't know better it would appear as nothing but a random list of numbers. It's the proteins some fats that cause the anomaly.

Your excess weight will drop off effortlessly like magic by using the glycemic index chart. But that's not all. . . it helps diabetics control their blood sugar levels it also helps with quite a few general health issues like heart disease.

Once you master the glycemic index chart you've taken a terrific first step in health longevity.
